Chapter 8

chapter 8 is about the authors thought pattern. Throughout the chapter you can tell its importance. this chapter helps the student better understand how to structure their paragraph. It explains the 6 common thought problems. After reading this chapter it helped me realize that when you do have a specific structure that one should be writing in it makes the writing easier. Reading this chapter helped me in restructuring my paragraphs and essays so that they flow better.

Chapter 7 Reflection

Overall, I felt chapter 7 gave great details. What really helped me was the way it broke down how to understand breaking down paragraphs. I will definitely look to this as a guide for giving supporting details in my essays. The type of supporting details also made this chapter very interesting.

Chapter 5 Reflection

I was very familiar with the topics in this chapter. I've always been the type of person who skims through the chapter to either see how long it is or what its about. I like the way the chapter helps readers with a guide on how to preview textbook chapters I feel that is something that not only college students but everyone needs to know.

Body Piercing & Tattooing: Risks to Health

I found this article to be very interesting because I realized when I first started college back in 2009 there were multiple people walking around campus with crazy tattoos and piercings and I was one of them. I got my first tattoo when i was about 16 and I've been addicted ever since. I think there's something about seeing your ideas and or drawings actually scripted on your body. Many people look at tattoos as a way to express who they are through art and some even use it to tell stories about their lives. Although there are many health risks with getting tattoos or piercings it is up to the person who wants to get the piercings or tattoos to do the research and make sure they use precaution before and after getting it done.

Chapter 4 Reflection

Chapter 4 clarified multiple things for me after reading it. Although I was very familiar with some of the topics, I now have a better understanding of the definition and usage. The chapter has various amount of important information about  suffix, prefix, and root of words. I found the chapter to be very descriptive with what dictionaries include and breaks down each section in the dictionary and its use. I feel this chapter will be very helpful for my assignments as the semester continues.

Compulsive Gambling

I feel that although compulsive gambling is a disease it is also easily curable. Many feel the need to gamble to get out of debt but instead end up in debt anyways. Many often lose family, friends, and even themselves due to gambling. Although it is a recreational activity many people lose sight of that and become addicted.

Chapter 3 Context Clues

Reading Chapter 3 gave me a better understanding of using context clues. It describe context clues and also displayed examples on the use of each. It also gives a description of definition, synonym, example, contrast, and inference clues. I found the examples to each topic to be very helpful and clear. While writing a paper for another class i referred back to this text for help and a better understanding of the usage of context clues.

Chapter 2 Reflection

After reading Chapter 2 I learned how summarizing can be very helpful on answering essay questions, reviewing a film, recording data for lab reports and also summarizing short stories. It also assist me with the dynamics of working in a group and displayed several situations and how to deal with them. The chapter also gave me great tips on studying photographs and how to examine the details of the photo. Reading each page from chapter 2 will help me become a better college student and help me understand other assignments I have while in college.

Chapter One Reflection

Being that this isn’t my first year at college several of these topics in the chapter

I’m very familiar with. Being a college student is a big accomplishment for any

individual but also isn’t something that’s easy to maintain. I’ve learned with experience

that college is about time management. Once you learned how to manage your time in

college everything else will fall into place for itself.

Although I’m familiar with these topics in the chapter I still want to learn

different ways to perform these task. I’m still not good with time management but I know

will some guidance I will be. I also want to improve my preparation for exams and being

able to adapt to the college lifestyle. College can be a distraction if you let it but there are

still ways to remain focus.

After reading this I’ve learned how to develop reading and learning strategies

to help my learning style. I also learned how to improve my comprehension different

methods to improve my comprehension. Another helpful section in the reading

was “Analyzing Difficult Readings”. I felt that section allowed me to figure out what

type of reader I was and help me in certain areas.

Although this isn’t my first semester in college I do feel like there is multiple

things I can improve on and also learn. I hope to learn many different aspects to improve

my test taking skills and reading comprehension as I feel those are the areas that I need

improvement on.
